This might get a bit long-winded, so please bare with me.
I like to race against a friend, we used to compete in a co-op championship but now that's not an option we have started a multiplayer championship with the two of us and a full grid of AI cars set to expert. For most of the races I take my setup over his place and we are both in the same room while racing.
A few weeks back, I turned up and set up my PS4, wheel and got online. However, when I invited him into the lobby, he couldn't join the lobby, just got the couldn't connect message. He then went into the lobby and tried to invite me, only to get the same. Maybe the game save is corrupt, so I set up a new championship, again he couldn't join. I also tried setting up a standalone race in the multiplayer hopper and he couldn't join by invite or by finding the race in the list.
Time to try a different approach. I joined someone elses game, chosen from the multiplayer list, and got in fine first time. I invited my mate and he joined ok. We had a quick race and then tried to join each others race, no luck there. It seemed that we could race each other as long as neither of us was the host. The common link was that we were on the same internet router. With this in mind I hooked up to my phone to use it as a wifi hotspot. This worked! We were able to get on our multiplayer championship no problems whatsoever. Cracked the problem, you cannot race against a host using the same internet connection, and to prove this, my mate connected to my phone and wouldn't be able to play our championship? Wrong, we connected fine and could race each other.
So, to summarise, we cannot race each other if one of us is the host on my mates router, but can race if neither of us is the host. We can race using the same internet, using my phone mobile data, and we have tried to race online when I'm at home on different routers. This points to a problem with the router, but we can both use it as long as we are not hosts, also no settings have been changed on the router and we have been using this router for a few years without problems. He is getting a download speed of around 6Mb/s and upload or about 700kB/s which should be plenty.
Ayone have any idea what could be causing this problem?
