Can you feel the performance difference in Career mode?

Hi, I'd like to know if you guys can feel the difference in performance of the cars once you have put on a number of upgrades to the car?  Suppose you overtake Mercedes or the team that was previously at the top in terms of car performance, is it actually easy to beat them? If  yes, does your teammate also beat them?
